Your Guide to Home Lighting and Light Bulbs

Home lighting is an important consideration when you are planning your home décor. Each room should be carefully considered to ensure that the light fixtures used bring out the best qualities of the room and create the perfect atmosphere. There is an increasing range available from pendant light fixtures, recessed downlights, chandeliers and floor lamps. However, an important element, which is often overlooked, is the choice of light bulbs. Time should be taken to consider the various light bulb options available, which can alter the look and feel of the light fixtures used throughout your home lighting.

Light Bulb Efficiency

There has always been some confusion about how much light you get from the different types of low energy light bulbs that are available. Low energy light bulbs consume only a fifth of electricity compared to a normal light bulb and produce five times the light per wattage consumed. For example 11 watt energy saving light bulbs generate the same light output as normal 60 watt light bulbs and they last up to eight times longer. There is no doubt that low energy light bulbs save you money over the light bulb's life time and are environmentally friendly.

Light Bulb types

Fluorescent light bulbs or energy saving light bulbs These light bulbs contain gases in a tube and have no filament. Fluorescent lightbulbs have been around for many years and are better known as the long white tubes commonly seen in light fittings on utility ceilings. Recent technology has reduced the size and improved the efficiency of light bulbs. Many different shapes and power options are now available for light bulbs.

The benefits are low power consumption (around 20% of a conventional light bulb) and long life (up to 8000 hours). They are ideal for light fixtures which need to be kept on for a long time. Many people assume fluorescent lighting is 'cold' but 'warm white' light bulbs are available which improve the colour of the light.

Incandescent light sources(conventional filament light bulbs) These are the conventional light bulbs which we all recognise and their main advantage is the colour of light they emit. Colours of objects are generally more accurate with this type of light bulb.

The disadvantage is that these light bulbs are inefficient by modern standards and have a relatively short life (around 1000 hours).

Incandescent light bulbs come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have a number of different fittings: - Bayonet Cap (BC or B22) - Small Bayonet Cap (SBC or B15) - Edison Screw (ES or E27) - Small Edison Screw (SES or E14). The Small Edison Screw light bulbs are becoming more popular in the UK.

Several different coatings are also available with the following properties: - Pearl is an all over frosting which diffuses the light and is best used in light fittings which have a light shade. - Clear light bulbs are more attractive when used in light fittings where the light bulb is visible or a sparkle is required such as crystal lighting and chandeliers. - Reflector light bulbs have a silvered surface to direct the light in a certain direction and are usually intended for direction fittings such as spot lights.

Halogen Light Bulbs Halogen lighting (filament light bulbs containing halogen gas) produces a very attractive light which closely resembles sunlight. These halogen light sources are more efficient than incandescent light bulbs producing more light per wattage and last longer. Generally halogen lights are small and generate a lot of heat so they can only be used in light fittings designed to cope with the higher temperatures.

There are two main types of halogen lighting available in the domestic market: - Low voltage halogen lights. These light bulbs operate on 12V which means a transformer has to be fitted either in the light fixture itself or remotely. The advantages of the lower power are that the safer voltage enables manufacturers to produce interesting and slim light bulb designs without the need to protect against danger from higher voltages. Transformers can be either electronic or 'wire wound'. The newer electronic transformers are more energy efficient and smaller but more expensive than the conventional wire wound type. Electronic transformers can be damaged by voltage 'spikes' in the mains supply (sometimes referred to as 'dirty mains'). These spikes can be caused by many factors such as fluorescent lighting, older motors, fridges and lift shaft motors. If persistent problems occur the use of mains voltage lighting is recommended. - Mains voltage halogen lights. This relatively new breed of light bulbs offers the light colour advantage of halogen without the need to house a transformer. The reflector light bulbs are known as GU10 or GZ10 and the latest small envelope non-reflector halogen light bulbs are known as G9.

Dimmer Lighting Most tungsten and halogen light fixtures are dimmable but only certain types of fluorescent lighting can be dimmed. When installing a dimmer you should check on the compatibility of the light fixture with the dimming device and that the dimmer has sufficient capacity to control the load on the circuit.
