Who wants their furniture to look old? The answer to this question is: Many people do. Distressed furniture is becoming more and more popular, having already established itself as a design style that is here to stay. Distressed looks are sometimes referred to as "rustic", "shabby chic", or "time-worn". This furniture is new, but has been altered to change its appearance.

Distressing can be accomplished in a number of ways:

· Striking the Furniture

Perhaps the most common method of distressing, actually striking the furniture with objects such as hammers, chains, mallets, or bags of marbles or other hard objects. An even more distressed look can be created by hitting the piece with nails and screws embedded into a wood plank. This will actually create scratches and gouges in the wood, and thus, a much more extreme distress. In order for the finished product to look most authentically aged, a combination of methods should be used. Obviously, the marks of a hammer or mallet differ from the small impressions that the links of a chain might make. This variety is important in creating the distressed aesthetic.

· Sanding the Furniture

A less dramatic way to distress furniture is through the use of different sanding techniques. Here, the furniture is sanded to create a worn appearance in certain areas. Good distressed furniture looks worn in the areas that true vintage furniture would be worn. This means that the corners and edges of the piece are sanded down to reveal the under layer (at differing levels). The gloss on any new piece of furniture is removed, although a thin finishing layer is usually applied at the end so that the furniture is protected in the desired state. Sanding is also done near the drawer pulls and handles.

· Applying Paint

Painting distressed furniture is an easy way to accomplish distressing that produces beautiful effects. One of the advantages of painted distressed furniture is the ability to show a variety of color on the surface of the piece. In painted distressed furniture, there is usually a dark undercoat that is covered by a lighter, often white, layer. The paints used are flat, to avoid the glossy look of a new piece. Once the lighter layer of paint has been applied, sanding is used to reveal the dark layer at points all around the piece. Again the natural points of wear are followed- edges, corners, and hardware areas. Another method of distressed painting involves the use of wax applied in patches before the second coat is added. This causes the paint not to adhere to the wood in predetermined areas. The wax is then removed with heat. Lastly, the light layer of paint is usually stained with rags or brushes for a last finish. This is not intended to be even, but rather to create rag or brush stains that create a distressed appearance across the main surfaces of the piece.

Distressed furniture will continue to be a centerpiece of style for many years to come. The methods described above ensure that consumers won't have to wait hundreds of years to get their very own "time-worn" looks.
