Adding "Bahama" Window shutters to the exterior of your home is an easy way to create a classic, elegant look, with a product that is also very practical. Bahama Window shutters, also known as "Bermuda" shutters obviously take their name from those islands respectively. The shutter design serves several important practical functions. In the days before air conditioning, especially in hot climates Bahama shutters were and still are used provide ventilation and prevent homes from overheating by shading windows from direct sun. Bahama Shutters have small horizontal louvers set in a frame or panel like other shutters. A larger shutter might contain two three or four panels, separated by mullions depending on the size of window to be covered. These standards generally referred to as Dade County standards are commonly used as a benchmark by manufacturers and as a point of reference by consumers. If you are considering Bahama shutters for your home, you should check wth local building codes and, if required for your area, purchase shutters which are rated to meet these new standards. Most homes do not require strict "hurricane code" shutters. It's also important to note that insurance companies may offer significant discounts for homes that have installed hurricane shutters or other related storm protection. The Bahama shutter design is popular method of protecting windows, in part because, in the event of a storm, the shutters are already in place and ready to do their job. They also create privacy and, when closed additional security. Commonly Bahama wood shutters are made from southern yellow pine, western red cedar or California Redwood. However wood is not the only option. Aluminum Bahama shutters, while using a light weight modern material, still retain the look of the historic wooden shutters. All excellent features, especially if the shutters are to be installed where access might be difficult, such as second story windows. Bahama shutters can add architectural interest to your home; help keep it cool in hot weather, reducing energy costs. They can also add privacy and security, while being a permanent ready defense against severe storm damage. All in all Bahama shutters are a winning combination of beauty and practicality - well worth installing on any home, old or new.
