It is frustrating to see holes on your plants’ leaves and branches after all the work you’ve done to try and keep your garden flawless. There are virtually thousands of pests that can weaken and ruin your plants if you don’t know the right maintenance approaches. Here are some easy tricks on how to deal with common pests. Starting Pest-Free It is recommended to always check new plants that you intend to place in your garden for pests. There may already be existing ones in your location but adding more will only make the problem worse. Carefully observe any new plants for presence of pests or signs of infestation, like holes and unexplained withering. Native species are good since these usually come with a lot of pest-resistant properties. There are also plants with disease resistant cultivars. You will most likely find tags and labels on plants indicating their resistance to certain diseases and microorganisms. If you happen to live in an area known for having various types of pests, it is ideal to grow plants that they don’t like to eat. Species with very strong scents and odors are usually the least favorites. The Actual Battle Resort to several alternative methods first before deciding to spray your plants. Spraying should always be considered as a last resort since these can be unhealthy to the plants and beneficial microorganisms as well as human beings. If the pests are already present, you can simply handpick visible ones to be eliminated. Search for snails, beetles and caterpillars. You may choose to crush them immediately or put them in a bucket of soapy water. A hose spray will easily take out aphids, mites and leafhoppers. As for slugs, dig a hole big enough to place a plastic cup in. Fill the plastic cup with beer, which will most likely drown several nocturnal pests. Other traps with artificial pheromones are also available for moths and maggots. You may want to place other animal species like frogs and praying mantises since these devour pests. Beneficial nematodes and other bacteria may also be placed in your garden to directly solve problems in the soil. Chemical Warfare If all else fails or if infestation is already destroying your garden quickly, you may have to invest in insecticide. There are insecticidal soaps available that deal with common garden pests like scales, aphids and bugs. These are considered safe and non-toxic to human beings and house pets but can be harmful to beneficial bacteria. You can buy commercial versions or make a homemade one by simply mixing 1 to 3 teaspoons of liquid dish soap with 1 gallon of water. Horticultural oils are basically used to smother and should be applied during specific periods of the day. These are safe to human beings but may damage some sensitive plants. Botanical pesticides come from plants such as neem oil and citrus oils. These are non-selective pesticides and can be harmful to humans and house pets. There are several homemade remedies that can effectively be used as a pesticide, such as garlic, hot pepper, baking soda and vegetable or mineral oil. Garlic is rich in sulfur which can solve powdery mildew problems easily. A lot of recipes are usually based around these household ingredients. Some of these may not work as well as others but try to find the right one that suits your garden needs specifically.
